It’s time for me to get a little bit personal today, and discuss an issue in my own life, and that is Work/Life Balance.

I currently work for a larger nationwide bank, and previously I worked for a small credit union.  Each job has its advantages and disadvantages, as well as associated perks.  I’m asking you, as my reader, to please discuss in the comments your take on the situation as I outline it here:

First, the bank:

Good things:

  • Full Time I’m working a full-time job so I have a good sized income every other week.
  • Experience Working on business accounts is something that I never did at the credit union, as well as vault responsibilities and high amounts of traffic.
  • Sales Education The bank is so money focused that I am extensively trained in how to sell its products.

Bad things:

  • Supervisor My boss seems to have an issue with anyone who has a higher degree than her, and my degree seems to insult her.  She lists mistakes I make and reports them rather than showing me where I made the mistake and how she would like me to handle similar situations in the future.
  • Time Because everyone else is part-time due to school, I get stuck working when my wife is at home, this means we don’t see each other very much.
  • Environment I am not allowed to put anything ‘personal’ in my workspace so my surroundings depress me.
  • Products The products the bank offers are not as good as what the credit union offered, and I feel like I am doing a disservice to the customer for recommending them.

The Credit Union

Good Things:

  • More Time There is more time for my wife, blogging, and time devoted to God if I work for the credit union.
  • Coworkers I enjoyed all the people that I worked with at the credit union, and count them all among my friends still.
  • Environment A family atmosphere made going to work the most relaxing part of my day.
  • Products The credit union overall beats the local financial institutions in rates, services, and fees.

Bad Things:

  • Part-time I will only be working 19.5 hours a week, which means I’ll need to find ways to supplement my income
  • Advancement A promotion means a move to a bigger city and a lot of extra hurdles to overcome.
  • Volume The credit union gets 1/3 the traffic that the bank gets on a daily basis, so I risk falling into boredom.

I’m asking for advice.

What should I do? Both jobs are open to me at this point. Please comment, I would like to know your opinion.
