Mmmm… summerGuess what I was doing all morning?

Picking raspberries, that’s right!  Delicious, nutritious raspberries.

Right now at my grocery store these little guys are running about $5.00 a container, and I was able to fill up 5 containers in less than an hour in my super secret raspberry patch.  For an hours work I made $25, if I turn it into jam it works out even more to my advantage, and if I make it into wine, that hours work could have a value of $100.

If you have some spare time I recommend getting a book about your local wildlife, and discover some edible things.  It is a great way to spend a Saturday morning with the family, and the best part is that you are saving money while doing it.

Things to look out for in a raspberry patch:

  • Thorns- you can avoid them by turning the bush by the leaves, but prepare to be caught off-guard every now and again.
  • Bugs- Tick and mosquito spray is a good idea.
  • Bad Berries- If a berry looks suspicious, drop it on the ground, it will probably grow into another fruitful plant for next year.
  • Dehydration- Bring several containers full of the best drink in the world- water.

If there are any plants that you and your family gather to save some money, please post in the comments section so that we may all profit from your expertise!
