What would a family finance site be without some fun things you can do for little or no money?

  1. Board Games are a great way to spend time with the family.  I like the game “Apples to Apples” because it is simple to set up and VERY funny if you play it right.
  2. Toss a ball.  Seriously, playing catch with anyone, no matter how old you are, is fun.  Try doing goofy throws or one handed/behind the back catches.  If you’re really cheap you can even make a ball out of duct tape and plastic grocery bags.
  3. Go to the woods.  See who can find the neatest bug, prettiest flower, or pick up the most trash.  Most communities have parks where you can go on walks.
  4. Go sledding.  We would grab trays from a cafeteria and take them sledding, fun and virtually free. (Don’t steal the trays, ask to borrow them and return them)
  5. Rearrange a room.  My wife and I rearranged our living room last week and had a blast.  If it’s a bedroom, make sure the primary occupant gets to pick where furniture goes.
  6. Potluck Party.  Invite 2-4 other families over and assign a different course (appetizer, main dish, dessert, beverage) to each family involved.  Enjoy the crazy combinations you may get.  This is also a great chance for people with children to find playmates and sitters for their kids.
  7. Mr. Potato Head.  Not the doll, this is where you hang upside-down over a couch, and put sunglasses under your chin.  If you frown it looks like your “Mr. Potato Head” is smiling, and vice versa.  Try to use funny voices too.
  8. Build a fire.  Roast marshmallows, if you’re in the city you can use a grill.  Burn broken furniture and documents containing credit card numbers, social security numbers, etc.
  9. Make a snowman.  Or other snow… “things” if you are in college.  I’m looking at you UW Stevens Point.
  10. Name some of your own, this site isn’t just about me you know :)
